The Red House: A Dream Come True

Every time we visit family in Kennebunk, we look at the real estate ads, dreaming of the day we can retire to Maine. Last summer, we spotted a listing for a duplex near Mother's Beach that was actually reasonably priced. When it was still on the market by Halloween, we went to the open house and started to think seriously about buying a rental property. With interest rates and housing prices where they are, this seemed like the right time to jump.

By the time we talked to the bank and realized we could actually afford it, the duplex had sold. But it had gotten us thinking, so we headed up after Thanksgiving to look at houses near Kennebunk Beach and Goose Rocks Beach. Not sure which one was quite right, we decided to hold off until after the holidays.

During a second trip last weekend, we found the perfect beach cottage on Drakes Island in Wells. We made an offer, and after some negotiating, it was accepted!

It's a small but open and airy 2-bedroom cottage a short walk from the beautiful sandy beach. It supposedly has a solid rental history, so we plan to rent it out during the summer and enjoy it ourselves on long weekends in the off-season. While not fully winterized, it does have a woodstove for the colder weather. It needs a lot of updating, but nothing we can't handle slowly over time. We close on March 28 and can't wait to see what it looks like under all the snow!

Llama's Bed

Birthday Walk

Bread today - from the inside oven

Of course I didn't quite follow the recipe. I used some sour dough starter since I was about to throw away a cup of it...seemed a shame. I mixed the dough. Gave it a 24 hour cold rise in the fridge. Brought onto the counter when I came home from work at midnight and then baked in the morning in a Le Creuset dutch oven. Beautiful bread. Great crust and crumb. Moist and flavorful. And easy.

Momma packs away and sorts

Robin decided to pack away things that were too big and things that were too small. The boxes were irresistible for the boys. They were even in the right boxes! Don't worry, they got out before the boxes went to the attic...
